Changing sound wave and cursor position when zooming

Running CS6 on Windows 7, mainly for voice recording. Often, but not every time, when I need to zoom in on the sound wave to position an amendment or insert silence to over-record, the sound wave changes shape abruptly, or does not display completely. I place the cursor where I think I need to make the amendment. I then "play" to check that the position is correct. It will play something from a different part of the sound wave. When I zoom out, the cursor is in a different place from where I put it. Zoom in again, and the cursor moves again - not necessarily to the same place. Something that may be connected is that, after making an amendment, CS6 often throws in an extra bit at the end which is taken from an earlier bit of recording - although that bit is still in its right place as well. And when I insert a bit of recording, it might well chop the end of the previous recording even though plenty of space has been left. Are these all part of the same problem or different ones? I do update the program regularly. Sound card and video card are high quality.
