Can't Hear Audio During Playback

Audition CS6 (5.0.2 Build 7)

Windows 8.1

If I load a sound file - .wav - the levels show the file is playing but I cannot hear anything.  Volume is up - same audio file in another player such as QuickTime plays back thru speakers fine.

This happens with both one-file-only display as well as Multitrack - I toggled the Mute in Multitrack but this doesn't change anything.

I've seen posts about setting Audio Hardware preferences but my only "choice" is MME - I do not have ASIO to test as an alternative.  Output is set to Speakers.  (via HD Audio(Win8.1))

I've toggled - and restarted between toggles - the "Use Machine Specific Device Defaults".  No change.

Any suggestions?  The only other posts for "During Playback" were for monitoring during recording but that's not what I'm trying to do.  No recording going on here.
