Make audio sound like a portable radio - then bring it back to full hi-fi

For part of a project I'm working on, I need to make the audio sound (in the first instance) like it's coming from a cheap, low-fi source - and also sound like that audio source is located in a different room to the one the listener is in.

So the effect comprises

(a) Make the audio sound thin, and restricted in frequency (I liken it to an old fashioned transistor radio)

(b) Make the audio sound muffled and with further attenuation in volume level/frequency (as if it were playing in another room adjacent to the listener)

For the second part of what I'm trying to achieve, I need the audio to quickly revert to its full majesty, so in a matter of a 3-4 seconds, the sound quality gradually improves from bad to good.

I've heard this effect on many recordings but I have no idea how to replicate it successfully, any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Steve
