Effects Help for rookie

Hi.  I've used Audition forever...now CS6...but I'm not familiar enough with using effects, so bear with me.

I use a single band compressor (I mostly record in mono) to smooth out the ups and downs of my volume, so I don't have as much hand editing to do.  However, problems I already have with "hard" sounds (K, T, P) seem to worsen.  Also, my "S's" acquire a whistle to them in some cases.  The S sounds are also exaggerated on compression.  How do I solve the problem with sounds that seem to have a lot of air behind then so they don't sound as harsh?  And what is the alternative to using the de-esser...that doesn't seem to help at all.@
